Animal Facility & Experimental Models

MIR Animal Facility (AF) has an extension of 1000 m2 including a Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) area able to host up to 30000 animals such as:

Mouse   Rat   Guinea Pig   Rabbit   Zebrafish

AF is allowed to use rodents for biomedical research by the Ministry of Health with Ministerial Decree n 100/2006 dated 10 July 2006 according to legislative decree N ° 26 - 2014/04/03, concerning the protection of animals used for scientific purposes. AF has an internal Ethics Committee" Organismo Preposto al Benessere Animale” (OPBA). To date MIR AF hosts about 7000 wild-type and genetically modified animals (mostly generated in house). Experimentation is developed through the use of SOP. Moreover AF is certified by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 9001) for research projects involving animal experimentation.

AF is specialized in the implementation of analytic alternative methods using sophisticated tools for in vivo imaging (IVIS spectrum - PerkinElmer, Doppler VEVO 2100 -Visualsonics and microCT SkyScan 1178 - Bruker), so that it is possible to reduce the number of animals involved in experimental procedures as well as the invasiveness of in vivo protocols.

Flexibility is core to our in vivo pharmacology services, giving clients the possibility to specifically design studies, from route of administration to dosing regimens and endpoint measurements.
